Pavers repair

Repairing paver bricks is a straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Replacement paver bricks
  • Paver sand (sand 131 ou screen sand)
  • Joint sand (polymeric sand if applicable)
  • A hammer or rubber mallet
  • Chisel or screwdriver
  • Broom
  • Dust mask and safety goggles

Steps to Repair Paver Bricks

1. Remove Damaged Bricks or Sunk

Carefully lift out the damaged paver bricks using a chisel or screwdriver. If they are stuck, tap gently around the edges with a hammer to loosen them.

2. Clean the Area

Remove any loose sand or debris from the base where the bricks were located.

3. Inspect the Base

Check the gravel or sand base for any issues. If it’s uneven, compromised or sunk, inject water for better compaction, add more paver sand and compact with a hand compactor or compactor machine (depending on the location), re-level it before replacing the bricks.

4. Replace the Bricks

Lay the new or repaired paver bricks in place, ensuring they fit snugly against the surrounding bricks. If necessary, trim the edges so they match the existing layout.

5. Fill the Joints

Sprinkle joint sand over the pavers and use a broom to sweep it into the joints. For a more durable solution, consider using polymeric sand, which hardens when moistened.

6. Compact and Clean

After filling the joints with sand, use a hand compactor or a plate compactor to compact the surface gently. This step ensures the paver bricks settle evenly and are firmly in place. After compaction, sweep the surface again to remove any excess sand. For polymeric sand, lightly mist the area with water to activate the binding properties, being careful not to oversaturate, as this can cause the sand to wash out.

Seal the Pavers

Optionally, apply a paver sealer to protect against stains and improve appearance. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Maintenance Tips

  • Periodically check for any shifting or damage and address it promptly.
  • Replenish joint sand as needed, especially after heavy rains.
  • Following these steps should help you effectively repair your paver brick area. If you encounter any specific issues during the repair, feel free to ask for more detailed advice!
